Person of the Day

We finally know how Prince died

Tests came out today that finally tell us how music legend Prince died: of an opioid overdose just one day before he was scheduled to meet a specialist about his addiction.

Prince was known for not using drugs and living a clean life. So his death by overdose is a big shock.

What's happening now?

Federal prosecutors and the DEA are still investigating how Prince got the drugs. He was found with prescription opioid medication on him, allegedly to treat hip and knee pain from years of jumping off stages and performing. His death is subject to a criminal investigation now.

Prince is not the only one.

Opioids are super addictive and are prescribed as painkillers. Some examples are Vicodin, OxyContin, Avinza, Lomotil and even morphine.

Opioid addiction has pushed the death rate among young adults to levels that have not been seen since the end of the AIDS epidemic. The 2014 overdose death rate among white Americans from 25-34 years old was five times the 1999 figure. Recent measures to cut down on prescriptions have led to markets being flooded with cheaper and more dangerous options like heroine, another killer.
