Ukraine is marking the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster when an uncontrolled reactor blew up and spewed radioactive material that drifted all the way across northern Europe.

The day was April 26, 1986. Countless people have died because of exposure and around 180 residents continue to stay inside the exclusion zone. The country is also building a shield-like structure to secure the site and work to remove the radioactive content in ongoing.

To commemorate the disaster, people shared pictures of present-day Chernobyl and held vigils for those who perished.

An Australian artist painted murals inside one of the reactors of a doctor who was in Chernobyl at the time of the disaster.

It's the first artwork created inside the plant since 1986.
