Darnell Earley to resign from Detroit Public Schools
Darnell Earley, Detroit Public Schools' Emergency Manager will resign from his position on Feb. 29. The announcement was made by Gov. Rick Snyder's office after the widespread “sick-outs” in the city by the school teachers. The teachers have been protesting the conditions of the buildings and have been asking for better pay along with more resources in the classroom.
During city inspections, classrooms and buildings were found infested with rodents and insects and had visible water damage. The American Federation of Teachers basically held Earley responsible.
"We are charging that the DPS and Darnell Earley have let the fiscal situation and the environmental conditions of the schools deteriorate so severely that Detroit is not providing a minimally sufficient education."
Earley said he's stepping down of his own volition. He says he had completed the tasks set for him by Gov. Snyder.
“When I was appointed to this position, Gov. Snyder and I agreed that our goal was for me to be the last emergency manager appointed to DPS. I have completed the comprehensive restructuring necessary to downsizing the central office, and the development of a network structure that empowers the educational leadership of our schools to direct more resources toward classroom instruction. This and other initiatives implemented over the past year were completed ahead of my 18-month schedule as provided in the (Public Act 436 of 2012)."
